Typically, the patient is made to stand and walk a few steps bearing full weight on the operated leg on the day of surgery. This is done with the help of a walker and our capable physiotherapy team.
Depending on patient’s confidence and general health, he/she can be discharged anytime between 3 days to 6 days post-surgery.
Timelines:
Before discharge: The patient will be able to go to the washroom themselves and climb a few stairs. The goal is to make the patient as independent as possible before going home.
- 3 weeks: At the end of which most patients are able to walk without a walker and do all household work confidently.
- 6 weeks: At the end of which most patients are able to cross a road, visit friends and return home independently.
- 12 weeks: Most recovery and major concerns are now in the past. Long haul flights and travel can now be undertaken.
