Can I sit cross-legged or on the floor after hip replacement?

Sitting cross-legged and sitting on low surfaces are among the movements typically restricted after hip replacement, particularly in the first several weeks to months after surgery. These precautions are intended to reduce the risk of hip dislocation — a complication that is more likely when the new joint is placed in positions of extreme flexion or rotation before the surrounding soft tissues have healed and stabilised.

The specific precautions and how long they are maintained depend on the surgical approach used, the implant design, and the surgeon's assessment of the individual patient. Some approaches are associated with more restrictive precautions than others. Patients should receive a clear written list of precautions from their surgical team before discharge, and should raise any questions about activities — including floor sitting, driving, returning to work, and resuming exercise — directly with their surgeon. These discussions should happen before surgery so expectations are clear.
