World IVF Day: Celebrating Motherhood and the Journey Back to Women's Health

World IVF Day: Celebrating Motherhood and the Journey Back to Women's Health

Every year on 25 July, World IVF Day commemorates the birth of Louise Brown in 1978 — the world's first baby conceived through in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Her birth transformed reproductive medicine and opened the door to parenthood for millions of couples worldwide. Today, more than eight million babies have been born through IVF, making it one of the greatest achievements in modern medicine. As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, there is another equally important conversation that deserves attention — not how pregnancy begins, but how a woman recovers after childbirth.

Motherhood is the Beginning, Not the End

For many women, the IVF journey is physically demanding and emotionally exhausting. Hormonal stimulation, repeated procedures, anxious waiting, and the uncertainty of every treatment cycle require extraordinary resilience.

When pregnancy finally succeeds, the arrival of a baby becomes the fulfilment of years of hope. Yet once the celebrations are over, many women discover that childbirth has brought changes they never expected.

Whether pregnancy occurs naturally or through IVF, childbirth can affect pelvic floor strength, vaginal support, tissue elasticity, bladder control, and sexual wellbeing. These are common consequences of pregnancy and delivery — not of IVF itself. However, women who have invested so much in achieving motherhood often place their own recovery last.

The Recovery That Few People Talk About

Many mothers silently live with symptoms such as:

  • Vaginal laxity
  • Urinary leakage
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Pain or discomfort during intimacy
  • Reduced sexual satisfaction
  • A feeling that their body has 'never quite returned to normal'

Far too often, these concerns are dismissed as an inevitable part of motherhood. They are not simply cosmetic concerns. They are quality-of-life concerns that deserve proper medical attention.

Modern Cosmetic Gynaecology: Restoring Function and Confidence

In my practice at Shri Kripalu Hospital, Beed, I meet women months or even years after childbirth who believed nothing could be done. The most rewarding part of these consultations is often the relief on their faces when they realise effective, evidence-based treatment options are available.

Depending on an individual's symptoms and examination findings, modern cosmetic gynaecology offers minimally invasive treatments that may help improve:

  • Vaginal laxity and tissue support
  • Mild stress urinary incontinence
  • Vaginal dryness and intimate discomfort
  • Pelvic floor function
  • Postpartum tissue quality and confidence

Treatment is always individualised. The objective is not to change appearance, but to restore comfort, function, confidence, and overall quality of life.

Every Mother Deserves Recovery

On this World IVF Day, we celebrate every woman who has achieved motherhood — whether through IVF or natural conception.

Giving birth should not mean accepting discomfort, embarrassment, or loss of confidence as the new normal.

Motherhood deserves celebration.

Recovery deserves equal attention.

If you are experiencing postpartum pelvic floor concerns or intimate health issues, consult a qualified gynaecologist to understand the treatment options appropriate for your condition.
