Get to Know Your Doctor: Dr Anikode Subramanian Ramaswamy, Expert Pathologist, Researcher, and Laboratory Quality Specialist

When it comes to accurate disease diagnosis, pathology forms the foundation of effective medical care. Behind every laboratory report is a specialist who identifies diseases, guides treatment decisions, and ensures diagnostic accuracy. I am Dr Anikode Subramanian Ramaswamy, Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology at PES Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Kuppam, and this is an introduction to my work.

What is my educational background and training?

I completed my MBBS from M. S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bengaluru, and earned my MD in Pathology from JJM Medical College, Davangere, both affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka.

Beyond my core qualifications, I have pursued advanced training in laboratory quality management, NABL and NABH accreditation standards, healthcare quality management, hospital administration, nephropathology, and cervical cancer screening. I hold certifications including training in Laboratory Quality Management and Internal Audit as per ISO 15189, a Certificate Course in Healthcare Quality Management from The Sankara Nethralaya Academy, and assessor training for ISO 15189:2012 with the Quality and Accreditation Institute.

I have also completed the ISN-ANIO Basic Clinical Nephropathology Certificate, a government-certified course in hospital management, and a national certificate course in cervical cancer screening for pathologists.

What conditions and areas does my practice cover?

My areas of specialisation span the full breadth of diagnostic pathology. I work extensively in:

  • Histopathology - tissue biopsy interpretation across surgical specimens, with particular interest in soft tissue, dermatopathology, and gynaecological pathology
  • Cytopathology - fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), Pap smear evaluation, and fluid cytology including cervical cancer screening using the Bethesda system
  • Hematopathology - peripheral blood smears, bone marrow aspirates and biopsies, and haematological disorders including leukaemia and anaemia evaluation
  • Clinical Pathology - routine diagnostic workup of urine, stool, and body fluids with quality-assured reporting Immunohistochemistry, Dermatopathology, Nephropathology, Cancer Pathology, Breast Pathology, Thyroid Cytology, and Placental and Perinatal Pathology

In addition to clinical diagnostics, I specialise in laboratory quality and accreditation — including ISO 15189:2012 standards, NABL compliance, internal auditing, and assessor roles for laboratory accreditation across healthcare organisations.

What is my role in laboratory quality and accreditation?

I am a qualified assessor for the Quality and Accreditation Institute, contributing to the improvement of laboratory quality standards across healthcare organisations. My expertise in NABL, NABH, and ISO 15189 standards has helped strengthen quality assurance systems, laboratory compliance, patient safety initiatives, and healthcare excellence.

My leadership roles have included serving as Laboratory Director, member of accreditation committees, quality management teams, and institutional governance bodies. NABL accreditation ensures that a laboratory meets international standards for quality and technical competence and helping laboratories achieve and maintain that standard is a significant part of my professional work.

What is my research and publication record?

I have authored more than 56 peer-reviewed scientific publications in leading national and international medical journals. My research spans cancer pathology, dermatopathology, nephropathology, breast pathology, gynaecological pathology, laboratory medicine, immunohistochemistry, cervical cancer screening, infectious diseases, and innovative approaches to medical education.

I serve as a reviewer and editor for several respected medical journals. My research includes studies on histopathology of invasive breast carcinoma, squash smear cytology in central nervous system lesions, utility of indigenous cytological techniques, tumour budding in breast cancer, and ABO blood group associations with breast lesions — among many others across two decades of active research.

I also serve as a frequent keynote speaker and invited faculty at national and international conferences, and have delivered invited lectures, CME sessions, and academic workshops across India and abroad.

What should patients and clinicians expect when working with me?

Pathology is the discipline that confirms diagnoses, guides treatment planning, and underpins evidence-based clinical decisions. Every tissue sample, every cytology specimen, every laboratory report that passes through my department is reviewed with meticulous attention to accuracy, quality, and clinical relevance.

Whether you are a clinician seeking a diagnostic opinion, a patient whose biopsy requires expert interpretation, or a healthcare administrator looking for laboratory accreditation guidance, my practice is built on a commitment to diagnostic accuracy, quality standards, and the ongoing advancement of pathology education and research.

I am based at PESIMSR, Kuppam, and can be reached through my LinQMD profile. Clinicians seeking a second opinion, specialist pathology reporting, or laboratory quality consultation are welcome to connect.
