World ORS Day 2026: ORS First – Every Child, Every Diarrhea, Every Time

World ORS Day 2026: ORS First – Every Child, Every Diarrhea, Every Time

Diarrhoea is one of the most common illnesses affecting children. While most cases recover with proper care, the greatest risk is dehydration, which can develop rapidly, especially in infants and young children. Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) is a simple, inexpensive, and lifesaving treatment that prevents dehydration by replacing the fluids and essential salts lost during diarrhoea.

World ORS Day 2026 Theme

“ORS First: Every Child, Every Diarrhea, Every Time”

This year's theme highlights an important message: every child with diarrhoea should receive ORS as the first step in treatment. Early use of ORS can prevent severe dehydration, reduce complications, and save lives.

What is ORS?

ORS is a scientifically balanced mixture of glucose and electrolytes that helps the body absorb water efficiently. It is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF as the first-line treatment for dehydration due to diarrhoea.

When Should ORS Be Started?

Start ORS as soon as diarrhoea begins – do not wait for signs of dehydration. Continue giving ORS after every loose stool, even if the child vomits occasionally. Offer small, frequent sips if vomiting occurs.

How to Mix ORS Correctly

Small ORS Sachet (4.2 g)

• Mix one 4.2 g sachet with 200 mL of clean drinking water.

• Stir until completely dissolved.

Large ORS Sachet

• Mix one large sachet with 1 litre (1000 mL) of clean drinking water.

• Stir well until dissolved.

Important:

• Use the entire sachet at one time.

• Do not add sugar, salt, milk, or fruit juice.

• Discard any prepared ORS after 24 hours.

Continue Feeding

• Continue breastfeeding.

• Continue normal age-appropriate foods.

• Encourage plenty of fluids.

• Do not stop feeding during diarrhoea.

Zinc Helps Too

For children with acute diarrhoea, zinc supplementation for 10–14 days is recommended by your healthcare provider. Zinc helps shorten the duration and severity of diarrhoea and reduces future episodes.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Seek medical attention immediately if your child has:

• Blood in the stool

• Persistent vomiting

• High fever

• Severe dehydration (very sleepy, sunken eyes, passing little urine)

• Refuses to drink or is difficult to wake

Preventing Diarrhoea

Simple measures can prevent many diarrhoeal illnesses:

• Wash hands with soap.

• Drink safe, clean water.

• Maintain good food hygiene.

• Continue exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months.

• Ensure children receive recommended vaccinations, including rotavirus vaccine.

Final Message

This World ORS Day 2026, remember the simple message:

“ORS First: Every Child, Every Diarrhea, Every Time.”

Every home should keep ORS readily available. Starting ORS early, continuing feeding, and seeking medical care when warning signs appear can prevent severe dehydration and save lives.
